Summer Trips and Holidays

Postby allherfaces » Sun Jun 10, 2012 9:32 pm

Last week I went on a 27 hour whirlwind trip to New York with a couple of gals I teach with. (4+ hours each way on the bus). We saw the new version of Porgy and Bess on Broadway which was fantastic!! -- Any Audra MacDonald fans out there? It was so emotional, I  couple of times....am much more apt to do this at a movie than a play!

Here's the website for the play, if you want to take a peek.

Also went to the New York Public Library to see the Shelley's Ghost exhibit, featuring manuscripts, letters, momentos, etc from Percy and Mary Shelley, Lord Byron and others in their "circle." Many of these things had never been seen outside of the Bodleian Library in Oxford! While some were a bit strange (a tiny fragment of Percy Shelley's skull [xx(] ), I was over the moon getting to see "in the flesh" pages from Frankenstein!! Some of you know that I love this novel and am teaching a course on it this fall (along with filmed adapatations, etc.) Of course I had to buy a bauble at the gift shop [;)] Also got to have dinner with my old friend Bill along wth his boyfriend Bob, a real treat. If my friend ever sends me her photos of the trip, I'll post some.

Here's some info about the exhibit, for those who may be interested:

On Friday Allison and I are going with her parents to CAlifornia. First we'll spend a few days in Yosemite National Park and then the rest of the time in San Francisco. It's her parents 60th wedding anniversary, so we decided to take them along. Allison has a conference for a few days--maybe this means I'll be doing the wine country tour without her  Not sure what I want to see or see again there (we went for my parents' 50th wedding anniversary in 1996, as they met and were married across the bay in Oakland); am thinking about Alcatraz Island  I definitely want to get me a nice Crab Louis salad. Anyway, I'll definitely get some pics of this trip. Soooo lucky to be going. Then back home for a few weeks before visiting my folks in Texas.

Do you have any summer travel plans?

Your Californian trip sounds wonderful Nancy, I would love another visit there but I hate the 12 hour flight with a passion! The weather here is so awful I can't wait to get away. We have a four day trip to Marbella, Costa Del Sol in about a months time and then towards the end of August we're in Los Gigantes again. It's going to be a family honeymoon as the holiday was booked before Gemma and James decided to get married the week before! At least we booked separate apartments [:)]

Some good trips Nancy.
I would love to do the Californian trip too and like Carole the long flight puts me off!
as you all know it's Brittany at the moment for me then Henley in September, then Yorkshire Dales later in September.
July and August at home in sunshine I hope.

I will be in Texas in 2 weeks, alas for business, although I am hoping to take in a few sites if possible.

Other than that i don't see any trips happening this summer, as I'm trying to bounce back from multiple financial setbacks. (It never ends. )

But I look forward to hearing about everyone's adventures this summer! [:)]

What will happen in Vegas in 2014, Cas? Except that it stays there? [:D]

Tove and I will go to Åland on Saturday for a week. Next adventure will be in August, when we're going to the beautiful Vättern lake for a week. Maybe a little weekend trip or two in between will happen. There's a chance we can borrow a friend's camper van, that would be cool! [8D]

Wishing everyone great trips!

My Holiday year is like a vast desert, nothing for ages, im suffocating. We have a week in Spain july 21st, at a nice villa with a pool, its near alicante, which has a stunning spanish castle on a cliff, it will be nice and hot just as i like it, but that, i am pained to say, is that. we have to wait till next year for another trip. it will be awful. But, mustnt grumble, i know some folk dont get many holidays at all, im lucky to have the ones i have

I usually stay local in the summer as weather is best in this area during the summer months...plus I AM starting a new job.
a short trip back down to N.Carolina and maybe a visit or two to NYC, a visit to Maine..local. I spend most of my time on the cape..plus I have friends from N.Carolina vacationing on the cape for 2 months ...lots of friends from various parts of the country are usually visiting the cape in the summer.

nancy..you may want to go to Alcatrez for the history but Sausalito is a very nice place to spend a day..take the boat from the downtown area...sweet place..lots of intersting house boats. I wish I could come and spend the day or two in Napa w/ you..have a mud bath in Calistoga ..ahhh.

look forward to hearing about your Las Vegas itinerary, Cas. [8D]
