Dusty's version - or the other(s)?

Postby Corinna » Wed Feb 10, 2010 10:40 pm

I got inspired by the 'other versions' of Dusty songs that have been posted on various threads. Maybe we can collect some here. Which version do you prefer?

During her career Dusty 'covered' many songs, usually improving or at least equally the original. Off the top of my head there are just TWO where I prefer the 'original' version -
'Needle in a haystack' - The Velvelettes (no one could have improved on this!!), and 'You've got a friend' by Carole King.

Carolyn (Cal) Gill still has a great voice. I think she's put on weight though!
I wonder if Dusty ever met the group?

'You've got a friend' is such a GREAT song, and although I prefer Carole's solo version, this is lovely. A lesson in how to keep a good tune with just guitar and piano.

This song has always been one of those that brings back a lot of memories, Carole or James Taylor, are the ones I most associate it with for me.

I know it's just a typo, Karen, but it makes you wonder what James Brown would've made of the song! [;)]

Here's another wonderful song.....

Songwriter Jacques Brel gives his somewhat 'rushed' version of 'Ne Me Quitte Pas'~If You Go Away.

I forget who sang the original version of "Arrested By You" (it was in the movie Better Off Dead), but I've always loved that version.

on the flipside, in the last couple of weeks I've heard like 5 or 6 covers of "I'd Rather Leave While I'm in Love", and I still think Dusty's rendition is tops. And better than Rita Coolidge's, which hit the US Top 40.

Jacques Brel might have written a great song, but he certainly can't sing. Even Peter Barlow from Coronation Street in the background looks fed up!
