You can magnify it by pressing Ctrl and '+' (and accordingly Ctrl and '-' to diminish it again) but it is a bit pixellated, so difficult to read.

Dusty was highlighted on the "one show" on bbc this evening. they did a section on " the beehive" and opened it with " style icon Dusty Springfield led the charge towards big hair" he showed clips of her singing and stills of her.he said her shows heightened interest in her hair style. then he went to Mayfair to see her hair dresser Mark Hilliard who said she had come to him after a previous hair dresser had damaged her hair with over bleaching. he devised the many hairpieces she then wore until her hair was healthy again and the backcombing and the beehive became her style.He then related how the originator of the style came from a lady IN 1960, now Living in Chicago who is 92 years old, her name Margaret Vinci Hildt. he spoke to her on webcam link and she was fab. :dig:
it was a great surprise to see such a decent review of it and with Dusty given such a prominent part in the item. :star: :star:

I was watching Emmerdale too [:o] ...but I've now just watched the clip and its so nice to see this and for them to give credit to Dusty and her bee hive.

The American lady was looking good for her age.

Also interesting to know that the hair pieces came about through damaged hair by another hairdresser! :no:

Whilst looking for something else entirely, I came across this little picture taken at the Casino Club in Bolton in April 1966. I actually met Dusty when she appeared there, I was waiting outside when she arrived and I congratulated her on getting to no. 1. She was wearing that very same trouser suit, so I guess it could even have been the same day [:)] This is the write up that accompanies the picture....

The final crunch for this line up of The Concords came on the 18th April 1966 when the group played support band to Dusty Springfield at Bolton Casino. Bill, the manager, had a list of songs which Dusty was to perform. On this list was ‘Dancing in the Street’. This song was on the usual repertoire of the Concords and Bill told the group not to perform this song and leave it for Dusty to sing. However, for some reason before Dusty came on stage, Bernard announced the next song would be ‘Dancing in the Street’, which meant Dusty would be one song short in her performance.

just watching the one show on bbc and they did a feature on Motown. they went to the Colston Hall which had seating for 1200 people. they interviewed a man who was there in 65 when he saw the tour, Supremes, Stevie and Martha Reeves etc. he was thrilled to see them but there were only 200 seats bought. it was nicknamed the ghost tour due to poor attendance and sales but then the reporter said they came back later in the year when they were given the seal of approval by Dusty Springfield when they appeared on RSG. the rest is history but for the fans they already had the undersold tour had seen them first. thats two weeks in a row this programme has featured sixties music and the hairstyles and Dusty was mentioned. :bravo:

Dusty's music was featured heavily in the Burberry show at London Fashion Week. Both "You Don't Own Me" (extended) and YDHTSYLM were used and I'll bet the audience went home humming them :yes:

I came across this NYTimes Magazine article...Great words for Dusty...I think Rob Hoerburger is right on the money. Try the link below as the web page includes Dusty video

http://6thfloor.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/03/reborn-this-way/?src=twrhp

MARCH 3, 2011, 4:12 PM
Reborn This Way

By ROB HOERBURGER
Lady Gaga’s latest monster hit, “Born This Way,” has sold more than 1.2 million copies already, and there have been almost as many comparisons to Madonna’s 1989 hit “Express Yourself.” But the song had another progenitor, from another diva who did interesting things with hair and makeup: Dusty Springfield, the bouffanted and eye-linered British wonder who in the ’60s made half a dozen seminal singles, one critical lodestone of an album (“Dusty in Memphis”) and later lots of other great records that few who were not critics ever heard.

Springfield was a lesbian who only ever had a few toes out of the closet, and her “Born This Way,” recorded for a British comeback album, “Reputation,” in 1990, was as close as she came to publicly embracing her sexuality. The song, pulsed by a post-disco club beat and lots of self-help bromidal lyrics, never got very specific, but you can hear in Springfield’s voice the passion and the pride. Gaga most likely never heard Springfield’s “B.T.W.” — it never had an American release — but as her career progresses, she could do worse than to learn a few things about singing between the lines, which Springfield did without peer. It seemed somehow poetic that Gaga’s “Born This Way” was topping the charts on the anniversary of Springfield’s passing; she died of breast cancer 12 years ago yesterday, a few weeks before being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In a bit of classic-diva confluence, yesterday also would have been the 61st birthday of Karen Carpenter. I was reminded of this last night as I sat in my neighborhood French cafe after a long day of work and heard, over the clink of wineglasses and the swoosh of salades niçoises, that clear, deep well of a voice. It was her first megahit, “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” from 1970, sounding as much at home in an artsy, downtown joint as Holiday or Piaf would. The connections between Springfield and Carpenter are obvious: both were classic pop singers from roughly the same era (Springfield even recorded an early version of “Close to You”), but there are some Carpenter/Gaga parallels as well: each was the most popular singer of her time, and each was adored by millions of young women and gay men. It’s too bad Carpenter never lived to enjoy her second act; she died in 1983, at age 32, after a protracted battle with anorexia nervosa. But we can still raise a glass to her, Springfield (and yes, even Gaga), women with the real vocal DNA.

That's weird as only this morning I was talking to Simon about Bobby Crush and we were trying to remember what he bought at the Sotherby's auction! Maybe this programme can be seen again on the iPlayer, I'll have to check. He's such a fan, I wonder why he sold them? This photo is taken at the preview before the original auction at Sotherby's.

You can watch the show online (maybe UK only) at..

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0 ... bby_Crush/

What a shame that we didn't know anything about this auction as bidding was going on online. And I feel that if he had brought them to DD, he would have doubled the amount raised. Opportunity missed, rather than Opportunity Knocks methinks [;)]

I'm thinkin that this topic was worthy of its own thread. :shock:

What a treat to see those Dusty Outfits, but what a travesty that they were sold so cheaply.

I'm sure that they would have fetched at least £1000 at Dusty Day. :pensive:

Thanks for the link, I'm gonna start giving that programme a whirl!!

He has I believe some of her dresses too.

I wonder who bought these jackets.

It would have been nice to have known about the auction on line beforehand. He paid £800 for them so someone got a bargain buying them for £750.

His charity was an old artists fund, so in that sense they will benefit, but I too feel they would have fetched more with abit of publicity on fan sites.

Yes, I guess as the items belonged to Bobby Crush he's entitled to choose the Charity, which looks like a good one..
I suppose if the buyer was a Dusty fan theres a small chance of those things appearing at the Dusty Day Auction..
If they are sold there, the Dusty Charities would benefit twice over...Or 'The Second Time Around'... [;)] [:)]

I think it deserves it's own thread too but Corinna is away at the moment and I'm not sure anyone else knows how to move the posts! [:I] Soon as I saw that butterfly jacket at the auction, I loved it and I think the black outfit is great, I'd wear that now! Not that I personally would have been able to afford them, but it is such a pity they didn't come to Dusty Day. Even if the money had gone to his chosen charity instead of ours, I'm sure they would have gone for so much more. In the programme they talked about specialised auctions and getting in touch with her fan club etc. Can't see that they did that, we're the nearest thing to a fan club now that the Bulletin has closed.
There's a part of you, that's a part of me...

I am gutted, I would have gone to a thousand, and who knows how much more had it been on dusty day, but then again that bloody woman would have outbid me yet again, cant blame her really, if she has the cash, i guess i would do the same if i could. But, as well as all this, they are about to, or just have, filmed a "flog it" special in henley. I emailed the bbc with a suggestion that they may want to make their middle bit of the show where they do something relevant to the area for ten minutes or so, about dusty, i gave them a rundown but never heard back and then i forgot about it. all these missed opportunities!!!

such a shame that he didnt put them to the Dusty Day auction and maybe split the money between his charity and Dustys, but then he bought them in the first place so its up to him how he disposes of them later and its a good cause again.
I wish all her stage clothes were on display somewhere instead of scattered all over the place.

dont know if any of the Brits watch country file Sunday evenings,but it was from Berkshire today. they were on the Thames and they went to Hurley,next to where the frogmill house Dusty rented is. they went to a boatbuilders yard and showed Henley with a quick glimpse of St Marys Church in the back ground. all that lovely setting with the river and the willow trees,wish I was there :love:

I was watching a programme on vintage tv on the weekend, it was called Solid silver sixties.
music clips of this show and chats with Chris Farlowe, Dave Berry and Tony Crane from the Mersey beats.
they were asked for stand out memories from those days and highlights of their careers. Tony Crane said he remembers the Merseybeats having a row with Dusty Springfield because they released "wishin and hopin" and had a top ten hit with it before she got the chance to release hers and she wasnt best pleased about it :shock:

Here's an old (2007 ) interview with a singer called Laurice who I hadn't heard of before

he mentions Dusty:

Dusty Springfield?

My biggest influence without a doubt. She was my idol. I saw her perform at Mr. Smith’s in Manchester years before when I was still a student, and I met her years later in the 80’s when she performed at Greg’s Blue Dot in Hollywood. She was every inch a lady, and an incredible performer. I would love to do a tribute album to Dusty Springfield if I ever get the chance. Her recording career was absolutely phenomenal. She could and did sing in about every style you could think of.

Did you write anything for her?

Yes. Well, I tried. But it was very difficult to get to her.

I wasn't old enough to go to Mr Smiths, you had to be 21, so lucky him [:D] Cas and I stood at the end of the road in the hope of seeing Dusty arrive but we never did. It was a bit of a seedy area back then.

thanks for the link Carole and the flyer from Greg's Blue Dot.

Just looking back at an old copy of the Bulletin( no 44). Fred Perry had some interesting recollections about Dusty's appearance at Greg's Blue Dot. He mentions he had some great photos from that night, I wonder will they ever surface.

In yesterday's Guardian newspaper Dusty gets a couple of mentions in their feature

50 key events in the history of pop music

Ready Steady Go!

"Dusty Springfield persuaded Vicki Wickham, one of the show's producers, to do a Motown special that she would introduce."

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2011/jun/11/ready-steady-go?INTCMP=SRCH

Pet Shop Boys resurrect Dusty Springfield's career

"the Pet Shop Boys struck gold by hooking up with arguably the most revered vocalist of her generation – Dusty Springfield. Their single together, What Have I Done to Deserve This?, was a win-win situation: the band got kudos for enticing Springfield into recording what was the classiest record the PSB ever made, her career got a new lease of life, and it reached No 2."

Thanks Clive, nice to see [:)] Reading their list of top 50 Pop recordings of the last 50 years, good to see that Dusty was one of the few to make the list twice.

While looking through the site, I saw this review of the South Bank Show from a few years back, can't remember reading it before (though I may have), think it's interesting and deserved a showing here.

What has she done to deserve this?

Peter Robinson on Dusty Springfield, a rare case of a self-doubting superstar

Peter Robinson
The Guardian, Saturday 8 April 2006
Article history

Soul woman: Dusty Springfield in 1964. Photograph: AP

You'll find out more about the passion and history of Britain's best ever pop voice from Dusty Springfield's brief biography on Wikipedia than from tomorrow night's gloomy - and largely unilluminating - South Bank Show profile, but one of the documentary's high points comes in an exchange between the Pet Shop Boys. Noting that Dusty has been elevated to that higher plateau of one-name pop stars, Neil Tennant explains that the singer was "like Elvis, or Bowie, or Liza..."

Right on cue, Chris Lowe pipes up: "Or Preston."

Later, archive footage reveals Dusty feeling "disassociated" from that famous moniker. It rather makes sense, given that Mary O'Brien only adopted her stage name for the purposes of popstardom, but what seems more stark is her other admission that, in terms of making music, "it's important what they think and not quite so important what I think".

At first glance this puts Dusty on a creative par with your average X Factor winner - none of whom write their own material, either - but, as is well documented, this is not the bleating of a willingly malleable starlet. Nor is this akin to an artist of today like Robbie Williams, derided for drawing attention to himself and throwing red herrings into his persona, then blubberin' and hollerin' when people don't understand him. It sounds like an admission of defeat, symptomatic of the ennui which plagued Dusty's professional life - even when she was at the height of her commercial or creative powers.

The South Bank Show documentary suggests that, had Dusty ruled the pop charts in 2006, her depression might have been more formally identified and even "cured", and that in these more permissive times the battle she found with her sexuality may not have been so acute.

It's certainly true that in 2006 Dusty would have immediately been outed as a lesbian, and that this may have taken some pressure away from her painfully insular private life, but it's wrong to assume that things would otherwise have been hunky dory. At one point in the programme, Kenny Everett's widow recalls an instance when she was severely winded after jumping in front of a Dusty so intent on killing herself that she was charging, headfirst, at a wall. You can imagine the sensitivity this story might have received from the News Of The World.

Similarly, the reaction of Heat magazine would have been to take Dusty's self-harm, depression and drink and drugs escapades and to cast her as a peculiar cross between Kerry Katona and Pete Doherty. All of which would have obscured her unique talent, just as the South Bank Show's treatment does.

Mercifully, the show contains some stupefying performances from Dusty, and the untouchable class of her act remains spellbinding. It's a class that cuts through the shoddy camerawork of 1960s pop TV. Without dancers or a visible band, one flick of a wrist from a woman on an empty stage makes Madonna's recent boombox humping seem as depressing as the fact that, even when the cameras stopped rolling, Dusty was still that one woman on an empty stage
There's a part of you, that's a part of me...

Interesting item about Ronnie Wilkins on the writing of Son Of A Preacher Man
(his co-writer on the song, John Hurley, passed away in 1986)

Ronnie remembers. “We were in the control room when [Wexler] asked me and John, ‘Why don’t you guys write a song for Aretha?’”

Producers often say stuff like that to hot writers, more as a courtesy than a real request. But Wexler was serious, and Hurley and Wilkins knew it.

“A few days went by and John and I were in our writing room and were trying to come up with something,” Ronnie recalls. “We were thinking of Aretha, and her father was a preacher and both of my grandfathers were preachers. I said, ‘She’s the daughter of a preacher man and you might say I’m the son of a preacher man,’ and that’s how we came up with the title. It took us half an hour, maybe 45 minutes, to write the song.”

Wexler loved the song. Two or three weeks later, he cut it with Aretha, and at the time he thought it didn’t fit the album they were doing. It was too gospel-sounding for her, but he was planning to record Dusty Springfield in Memphis. In early 1968, Springfield recorded “Son Of A Preacher Man” and toward the end of the year it was released on the LP Dusty in Memphis, and it became the song that defined Wilkins’ songwriting career. It was a Top 10 pop hit in the United States and Number 1 in England and all over Europe.

Surprised to read in this 1980 article about Buggles (Trevor Horn & Bruce Wooley) that Trevor Horn was not happy with Dusty's version of Baby Blue which they wrote

as songwriters they provided Dusty Springfield with a small success in “Baby Blue”. But small success equals failure with Buggles and Trevor Horn, who writes most of the duo’s lyrics, says that he got no kick out of Dusty recording the song.

“No-one ever records our songs as well as we can do them - I firmly believe that. Dusty’s ‘Baby Blue’ was a bit of a let-down because we had done a great demo.

I've read this critique before of what Dusty said and it's obvious the writer didn't understand what she was referring to - namely her habit of finding fault with every performance. When Dusty made this statement she had gotten to a point where she realized that she didn't have to be perfect and if the audience enjoyed the show maybe they were right and she was wrong. Far from being an "admission of defeat" it was actually a mark of professional maturity and self-acceptance.

Not impressed by the you tube performance. :no:

I think I sound more like Dusty than she does!!..
..Why is it that peope think they can 'be' Dusty by just sticking a blonde wig on their bonce? [:o] [B)] :?

This is definitely NOT Dusty!.. [xx(]

However I was intrigued by the last paragraph:

Just recently she has been cast a small part as a 'club singer' singing a Dusty Springfield song in a film due to be coming out in the cinemas....WATCH THIS SPACE!

This is the first mention we've had about the film in quite a while.

That's what I read. Seemed a little shifty. :roll:
:? Wonder why there is not more being said (entertainment media) about THE movie ?

Probably because they are still writing the script and the last four announced biographical movies have imploded.
I despair at this one as well because they are adapting Sharon Davis's book which simply re-told the false version of Dusty's life.

Oh right... in a way I was taking this as a positive, thinking that the Dusty film must at least have been cast.
Its all gone eerily and concerningly quiet on the film front. :roll:

I spoke with Simon about the film a couple of weeks back, he said it's still ongoing and he'd had a couple of meetings but until the script is completed, they can't go much further. Actors want to know what they're letting themselves in for it seems [;)]

Well in that case I guess the only thing to say is:

Will Young praises Adele and favourably compares her to Aretha and Dusty. :thumbsup:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It seems Will Young is Adele's number one fan as he has compared her to iconic stars such as Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield.
The singer, who released his new album Echoes this week, praised Adele in a recent interview for being successful for her talent alone.
Speaking to the Daily Star, Will said: ''It's great seeing Adele bringing classic-sounding music back. Adele's basically taken over the world without using any gimmicks. She has a brilliant voice with brilliant songs and brilliant production."
He added: "She has the same qualities as Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklin. But she's also really honest and funny. Brits can sniff out dishonesty. I don't think we'll ever see Adele get up herself."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I highlighted the word 'but' as I would have preferred it NOT to have been there...Dusty was honest and funny too wasn't she??.. :pensive:

Maybe, I'm bein picky. [:I]

:thumbsup: It's all good Carole.
Chalk it up to an off the cuff remark. :pensive: You know sometimes you say things, and don't have time to edit yourself. I'm sure he meant well.
Oh, and by the way.
Hooray Adele ! :bravo:
:yes: She's all that. :party:

I haven't been posting Twitter posts lately (it can be a lot to read), but i had to share this tweet from earlier today:

"used to keep all my Dusty Springfield records on a plank on my wall, but since I sold them, I just don't know what to do with my shelf." [;)]

brief mention of Dusty in this interview with Estelle Brown of the Sweet inspirations

TATM: What was recording “Son of a Preacher Man” with Dusty Springfield like?

Brown: [Springfield] was crazy. We had seen [Springfield] once before in the recording studio and didn’t really remember her. When she saw us, she knew exactly who we were… That was cool. “Son of a Preacher Man” was originally given to The Sweet Inspirations to sing, but we declined it. We turned around, and look who had a hit… We didn’t particularly like the song… So we didn’t do it.

Whilst trying to find whether Dusty ever played the Liverpool Cavern I found this little snippet from one of the Cavern 'Regulars'..

The Beatles were the best band and we used to do the "Cavern Stomp" dance. One day Dusty Springfield came in looking for someone to do the brand new dance "The Twist” I was photographed with her doing the dance and it was published in the Liverpool Echo.

I'm thinkin Dusty may have been playing at The Liverpool Empire (around the corner) and just popped into the Cavern for a 'Twist!'.. [:D] [8D]

Anyone fancy ringing The Echo re the photo?... [:)]

I'd love to see the picture too [:)] Dusty said that The Springfields decided to split after seeing the Beatles at the Cavern and as the Twist was at it's most popular from 61-63, maybe Dusty's only visit(s) there were during that period. I think I may have heard or read that The Springfields did appear there as a group but I'm sure Dusty never did after she went solo.

"Spooky" showed up several times on Twitter today, which was cool to see (in between tweets about songs like like "Who Gets Your Love" and "Something in Your Eyes"). :thumbsup:

LTD posted "Haunted". [:o] [8D] :what?: [:)]
