I was searching for some Dusty related books and came across some interesting passages in various books mentioning Dusty. Theses were brief excerpts and I'm paraphrasing, but I found them interesting.

Timi Yuro was interviewed in a book and she mentioned Dusty and her reputation for being difficult in the studio. She said she and Dusty were very much alike in that both wanted things done right in the studio. Timi said that she herself didn't like muscians not doing what she wanted and wasting her time and money in the studio. Timi said if Dusty had a fit in the studio it was because she cared so much about getting it right and some men did not want to listen to a woman. Timi went on to say that she and Dusty were "real tight" when Timi was in England and that Dusty was a real down to earth person; she was not on a star trip. She also said she thought Dusty was "really cool." I know I read in a book that Dusty went to one of Timi's shows in England and accidently entertained onlookers by having trouble parking her car. Does anyone here know much about Timi's time in England and her friendship with Dusty?

Brenda Lee, like Timi, said she loved Dusty(her voice). Brenda wrote she first met Dusty when she was still with the Springfields. She said some people thougt they would be rivals, but she and Dusty loved each others music. Brenda talked about Dusty's voice and said Dusty was her own woman and a free spirit and that she loved Dusty's mod clothing. Brenda was happy Dusty made it into the Hall of Fame, but thought it was a shame that it happened after her death. Brenda brought up a good point and that is the lack of solo women artists in the hall. She said most of the females were R&B singers in groups like the Supremes and that is why it was important for someone like Dusty to get in the hall.

There was an excerpt from a book about a gay African-American preacher mentioning Dusty. It seems that Dusty accompanied Madeline Bell back to the states at one point and Madeline took her to Harlem and introduced Dusty to some gospel singers who were friends of MB. He said they were aware of Dusty and were fans and at one point asked her to sing some gospel with them for fun. Dusty at first would not because she said she didn't know how to sing in that style. However, they persuaded her to join in the singing and that Dusty fell right in and did a great job. Later they all went out to eat in Harlem and he remarked how comfortable Dusty was with blacks.

There is a book called "Memphis Boys" and it is about the studio band in Memphis. There seems to be quite a lot of info on the Memphis album in this book. I may try to get a copy. Has anyone here read this book?

Interesting info there, SLB. I haven't read Memphis Boys, but it sounds like a good read.

Have you read Frank Allen's two autobiographies? Dusty's featured in both.

The info on Timi Yuro did come from the book "Ladies of Soul." The Brenda Lee book is called "Little Miss Dynamite:The Life and Times of Brenda Lee." I have read Frank Allen's first book and enjoyed it very much. Is there more about Dusty in the second book and is it worth getting?

In his second book, "The Searchers and Me", Frank Allen dedicated a whole chapter to Dusty - called "Dusty Days" LOL. There's also one more pic of her in it. I got a slightly scuffed copy really cheap at Amazon. It's worth having!

I must admit to not having bought it as I couldn't find it anywhere cheaper than £25 and I thought that a bit steep. I've never seen it anywhere, new or used, other than through his publisher and I've been looking out for a 2nd hand one. I think you got the only one Cor [:D]

Heard an interview on my car radio the other day with Arlen Roth, a session guitarist who has played with many...Bob Dylan, Phoebe Snow, Paul Simon, Ry Cooder ect...well all of a sudden he starts talking about his session with Dusty for 'Longing' He spoke very respectfully of her and really thought highly of the recording and hopes it will be heard one day...guess he in the dark. I looked him up in hopes of finding the interview...did find something similiar on a blog...maybe I'll let them know that 'Longing' did become available on 'Beautiful Soul'
[:)] [;)] (Arlen Roth is the guy on the far right w/ the big hair)

In my many years of session work, it’s sometimes amazed me just how many sessions I thought were going to be released on a real recording never really came out. This obviously, can be quite frustrating, especially when you are trying to build up your list of credits and your resume, but in the long run, it’s really the experience that counts.

For example, many years back I got to play on an album with the great English soul singer, Dusty Springfield, who I always had a deep respect for. We did this album at a time and place where I was almost becoming the “house” guitarist for this great recording studio called “914” Studios in upstate New York. The music was going great with Dusty, but she seemed so sad and troubled, and was unfortunately, also drinking heavily. As it turned out, to this day, the record “Longing”, was never released, even though many people have hailed it as some of her best work ever. I certainly hold out hope that one day it shall be released for the world to hear. But for me, the bottom line is that I can still put on my resume that I did record with Dusty Springfield, because after all, I did, didn’t I?!While being the “house guitarist” for that studio, I also played on Janis Ian tracks that were never released, and a great album with a duo called Janey and Dennis, who did this very high-budget album for Capital Records that not only didn’t come out, but it was while we were touring with the Bee Gees to literally promote this record, that we got the devastating news that it was shelved! That was a blow that many of us had a hard time recovering from! Funny too, because we had Max Weinberg on drums for that band, and we let him go, largely at my recommendation, only to have him get his famous Springsteen gig just 5 days later! It seemed that Bruce was also recording his album in that same studio as us at that time, and when the engineer found out that we fired Max Weinberg, he gave Max a listen, and sure enough, hired him, totally changing Max’s life forever!

That is certainly another example of just how much “turns on a dime” when it comes to this quirky business of music. One minute, you can’t buy a gig, and the next minute you’re on top of the world! Or in my case, one minute you’re on a hot album to be released, and the next minute, it was just a dream. Still, all in all, it’s these incomparable experiences that add up to a lifetime’s worth of great memories and one of a kind stories, for sure!

I think you definitely should let him know Paula, it sounds like it would be a wonderful surprise for him. Good to know that he spoke respectfully of Dusty, considering the problems that she had at the time. There is a great interview in Bulletin no 64 with Brooks Arthur, indepth and illuminating, he also speaks of Dusty in the highest terms, even though he lost money and had the hardest time in getting the Longing sessions done. I recommend that anyone really interested in the background to Longing, tries to get their hands on that interview.

8th November 1963

Dusty Springfield set out on her first U.K. solo tour, sharing the bill with The Searchers, Freddie & The Dreamers and Brian Poole & The Tremeloes. The first night was in Halifax.

Second night was in Bolton and I got my first live fix of Dusty [:)] :note:

I recently got this autographed programme from a lady who had seen this show on the Isle of Wight when she was nine years old and got this signed personally by Dusty.
she also met Tom and "the other chap who made up the Springfields he was going out with the daughter of Mr Pastry".
the lady said noone wanted to keep it in the family so she thought it would be nice if it went to a fan for their collection. I wanted it as it was signed to Elizabeth.

I would have demanded a kiss, but then again, I probably wouldn't have been married to the guy. :?

what year would this have been in? I'm trying to think when cassette tapes came out -- seems like it wasn't until the 70s.

Thanks for posting this, Cas. Very cool.

Actually Anita, you are so right! After I'd written Carole Pope and I came back on the page later, I thought no, it's Myra Hindley, but then didn't like the idea of Dusty having had a girlfriend who looked like Myra Hindley so didn't say anything! I'd date the hair as 1970.

I don't remember his name unfortunately Cas, I think I even made an appeal on here so that I could thank him again. It is a big photocopy and wouldn't fit in my scanner either. Not sure if I managed to post the photo or not but I vaguely remember having a discussion about it somewhere!

You can magnify it by pressing Ctrl and '+' (and accordingly Ctrl and '-' to diminish it again) but it is a bit pixellated, so difficult to read.

Dusty was highlighted on the "one show" on bbc this evening. they did a section on " the beehive" and opened it with " style icon Dusty Springfield led the charge towards big hair" he showed clips of her singing and stills of her.he said her shows heightened interest in her hair style. then he went to Mayfair to see her hair dresser Mark Hilliard who said she had come to him after a previous hair dresser had damaged her hair with over bleaching. he devised the many hairpieces she then wore until her hair was healthy again and the backcombing and the beehive became her style. He then related how the originator of the style came from a lady IN 1960, now Living in Chicago who is 92 years old, her name Margaret Vinci Hildt. he spoke to her on webcam link and she was fab. :dig:
it was a great surprise to see such a decent review of it and with Dusty given such a prominent part in the item. :star: :star:

I was watching Emmerdale too [:o] ...but I've now just watched the clip and its so nice to see this and for them to give credit to Dusty and her bee hive.

The American lady was looking good for her age.

Also interesting to know that the hair pieces came about through damaged hair by another hairdresser!

Whilst looking for something else entirely, I came across this little picture taken at the Casino Club in Bolton in April 1966. I actually met Dusty when she appeared there, I was waiting outside when she arrived and I congratulated her on getting to no. 1. She was wearing that very same trouser suit, so I guess it could even have been the same day [:)] This is the write up that accompanies the picture....

The final crunch for this line up of The Concords came on the 18th April 1966 when the group played support band to Dusty Springfield at Bolton Casino. Bill, the manager, had a list of songs which Dusty was to perform. On this list was ‘Dancing in the Street’. This song was on the usual repertoire of the Concords and Bill told the group not to perform this song and leave it for Dusty to sing. However, for some reason before Dusty came on stage, Bernard announced the next song would be ‘Dancing in the Street’, which meant Dusty would be one song short in her performance.

just watching the one show on bbc and they did a feature on Motown. they went to the Colston Hall which had seating for 1200 people. they interviewed a man who was there in 65 when he saw the tour, Supremes, Stevie and Martha Reeves etc. he was thrilled to see them but there were only 200 seats bought. it was nicknamed the ghost tour due to poor attendance and sales but then the reporter said they came back later in the year when they were given the seal of approval by Dusty Springfield when they appeared on RSG. the rest is history but for the fans they already had the undersold tour had seen them first. thats two weeks in a row this programme has featured sixties music and the hairstyles and Dusty was mentioned. :bravo:

Dusty's music was featured heavily in the Burberry show at London Fashion Week. Both "You Don't Own Me" (extended) and YDHTSYLM were used and I'll bet the audience went home humming them

I came across this NYTimes Magazine article...Great words for Dusty...I think Rob Hoerburger is right on the money. Try the link below as the web page includes Dusty video

http://6thfloor.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/03/reborn-this-way/?src=twrhp

MARCH 3, 2011, 4:12 PM
Reborn This Way

By ROB HOERBURGER
Lady Gaga’s latest monster hit, “Born This Way,” has sold more than 1.2 million copies already, and there have been almost as many comparisons to Madonna’s 1989 hit “Express Yourself.” But the song had another progenitor, from another diva who did interesting things with hair and makeup: Dusty Springfield, the bouffanted and eye-linered British wonder who in the ’60s made half a dozen seminal singles, one critical lodestone of an album (“Dusty in Memphis”) and later lots of other great records that few who were not critics ever heard.

Springfield was a lesbian who only ever had a few toes out of the closet, and her “Born This Way,” recorded for a British comeback album, “Reputation,” in 1990, was as close as she came to publicly embracing her sexuality. The song, pulsed by a post-disco club beat and lots of self-help bromidal lyrics, never got very specific, but you can hear in Springfield’s voice the passion and the pride. Gaga most likely never heard Springfield’s “B.T.W.” — it never had an American release — but as her career progresses, she could do worse than to learn a few things about singing between the lines, which Springfield did without peer. It seemed somehow poetic that Gaga’s “Born This Way” was topping the charts on the anniversary of Springfield’s passing; she died of breast cancer 12 years ago yesterday, a few weeks before being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

In a bit of classic-diva confluence, yesterday also would have been the 61st birthday of Karen Carpenter. I was reminded of this last night as I sat in my neighborhood French cafe after a long day of work and heard, over the clink of wineglasses and the swoosh of salades niçoises, that clear, deep well of a voice. It was her first megahit, “(They Long to Be) Close to You,” from 1970, sounding as much at home in an artsy, downtown joint as Holiday or Piaf would. The connections between Springfield and Carpenter are obvious: both were classic pop singers from roughly the same era (Springfield even recorded an early version of “Close to You”), but there are some Carpenter/Gaga parallels as well: each was the most popular singer of her time, and each was adored by millions of young women and gay men. It’s too bad Carpenter never lived to enjoy her second act; she died in 1983, at age 32, after a protracted battle with anorexia nervosa. But we can still raise a glass to her, Springfield (and yes, even Gaga), women with the real vocal DNA.

I saw the show as well, I think it was a new one, can't recall seeing it before. Someone got a bargain there.

That's weird as only this morning I was talking to Simon about Bobby Crush and we were trying to remember what he bought at the Sotherby's auction! Maybe this programme can be seen again on the iPlayer, I'll have to check. He's such a fan, I wonder why he sold them? This photo is taken at the preview before the original auction at Sotherby's.
