What a surprise for me to see the Sahara Tahoe and know that Dusty performed there. That is only about 50 miles from where I live and I have been to many shows there but I don't really remember Dusty being there. I saw Elvis there several times and that was a thrill! Of course the venue is really a nightclub within a casino and I have heard Dusty say in interviews that she hated nightclubs. Being born in Nevada and living here all my life, I have seen literally hundreds of entertainers but I sure wish I could have seen Dusty live. What a thrill that must have been! All we have ever had here are venues that are casino related and they just don't have the feel of a real concert. It's not as outrageous as Las Vegas here but it lacks a certain connection with the entertainer. I envy your stories of meeting the entertainer (esp. Dusty!) outside the stage door and things like that. No matter how big the star or how excited I have gotten over seeing some of them, it's still just basically a "showroom/nightclub" inside a casino. Don't get me wrong, I feel very lucky to have seen some great performers but I wish it could have been more intimate and not so cold feeling. Does that make sense?? Anyway, the picture of the Sahara brought back some memories for me. By the way, it is now called the Horizon Casino Resort and it is a beautiful location on Lake Tahoe. If she got a chance to see much I'll bet Dusty loved the scenery.

This is Batley Variety Club where Dusty played in the 60s. The doors opened Easter 1967.
I didn't have a ticket for the show, but I remember I went to Batley on my own and stood outsde the club all day hoping to see Dusty. I never saw her and I just took this pic to prove that I actually went!

The club is now called the Frontier Night Club with music and comedy for all tastes.

Great that you got to see others at that venue Evelyn and you're right about Dusty and nightclubs.
Dusty just did a week's engagement at the Sahara , The Spinners were also performing there at the time and Dusty said that made it a special week for her as she was a fan of theirs.

Thanks for the two clippings Cas, I don't have either of those. Seeing that photo of the stage reminded me of this one, I've never known where it was taken but it looks quite similar. Doesn't have to have been there, in fact there's a very well dressed (for Wakefield!) gent in the background but I'd think from the hair do, it was around the same time.

We also saw that show Cas, at both Liverpool and Manchester Odeon's. The date on the back of this photo says October 3rd 1966, Manchester, but it could have been Oct 5th in Liverpool! The pics from the two shows are almost identical.

Unfortunately we didn't go back stage afterwards as we were still at school and had to catch the train home. My Dad would have grounded me for ever if I had missed it!!

I think it was different if you were working in those days instead of being at school I certainly didn't have any freedom til I left home at 18 and left school and went to College to do teacher training!!!

But at least as Paula says I saw Dusty live!!

I do envy those who did meet her and go back stage...so thanks for sharing your photos and experiences.

Carole I checked in my photo album and this is the result.

Image
The photos with railings are at Manchester on October 3rd, 2nd show.
Photos without railings saying Liverpool on the 5th October 1st show.
Hope that this maybe settles it now.

So Cas and Carole saw this show in Manchester and Liverpool and I saw it in Birmingham 30th September 1966 a few days before you 2...is that correct??

Surprising what you find out all these years later!! [:D]

Thanks for sorting that Cas, the back curtains are identical which has always confused me! Before this tour Dusty made an earlier stop at the Odeon in Manchester on the Bobby Vee/Big Dee Irwin/Searchers package when this photo was taken backstage.

Vee Dee Dusty.jpg

The concert tour also took in Bolton Odeon which was my nearest venue. It was also the place I first saw Dusty in November of '63. I don't have any photo's from there but this article appeared in the Bolton Evening News when the theatre finally closed down. Sorry it doesn't enlarge but there's nothing about Dusty in the article apart from the fact that she appeared there.
