Thanks for the information about this show.Sadly it's a bit far from Hertfordshire. Please [beg] post your
reviews as I'll be very interested on their take on Dusty.Hopefully it wont dwell on her private life too
much and will concentrate on her fabulous music. :star: :rose: :pensive:

Well the show last night ..we did enjoy it and miming to Dusty helped as we were able to hear all her songs through this period of the 50 years anniversary since her first recording , her life was shown from all aspects from the takes re the songs until she felt it was right , to the china smashing , the kindness shown to her by Pat Rhodes , all her difficulties ,The South Africa problems.. her time in America .. her sexuality, Einstein .. they covered so much, Audience appreciated it and at the end they played Someone to watch over me , with pictures of Dusty being shown on the screen... so it was worth seeing and lovely to think that she IS remembered.and valued for the wonderful singer she was. :rose: :note:

I was planning to see the show when it comes down here, but that's not till November, so I'm thinking maybe I should get to one of the other dates. A friend in Swansea sent me a link to the review which seems to confirm what Karen says. Looks good. http://www.thisissouthwales.co.uk/Revie ... z2f2wKQlo1

A new play by Derek Webb celebrating the 50th anniversary of the start of Dusty Springfield's solo career
Without doubt the finest white soul singer of her era, Dusty Springfield is for millions the definitive pop diva. And 2013 is the 50th anniversary of the start of her extraordinary solo career.

Her lifestyle is the stuff of legend – and great drama. With her relentless quest for perfection and refusal to compromise, Dusty Springfield led a tormented life.

Her stage persona – extravagant black mascara and backcombed hair – was at odds with the quiet, shy convent girl Mary O'Brien and her sexuality.

The result was a downward spiral of drugs, alcohol abuse and self-harm– but, despite all that, she produced tremendous music, which still ranks as some of the finest of its kind.

'Call Me Dusty' celebrates the music, while exploring the dichotomy of the private person and her alter ego.

Playing Dusty is Jessica Sandry who starred in an acclaimed show about another legendary singing star, Doris Day, in addition to her many national theatre, television and film roles.

this afternoon on radio Wales they interviewed the lead and the writer of the show.
they started with IOWTBWY and ended with YDHTSYLM. [:)]
the star of the show is from Swansea. the interviewer kept bringing up the sexuality aspect of the play and to their credit they kept bringing it round to the fact that she was an early feminist who wanted to produce her work in a world dominated by men. they seemed to really have great admiration and respect for Dusty.
it heartens me to hear their take on her as a person and a sensational performer and appreciated her lack of confidence and vulnerability. they seemed to understand the person they were trying to project. :bravo:

I don't really like seeing people dressed as her.

Re: Dusty Show ..Call Me Dusty

Postby Cardiff Bluesgirl » Sat Oct 19, 2013 9:23 am

well I decided to go as it is only 10 minutes from me.
I saw a massive motorbike outside and thought to myself " I wonder if Rob came here on that [;)] "
well he was there but used 4 wheels not 2. [:)]
there were about 150 people there, mainly women and a few Dusty hairstyles amongst them.
the play was ok. the cast worked hard to tell the tale and the content wasn't too explicit so I wasn't too disturbed.
I still don't cope well with people dressed as Dusty though, they just don't have the personality and vibrancy of the real person for me.
some of the facts and events were a bit awry but overall it was fairly accurate. it was nice to see some recorded video film on in the background too
of course it skipped back and fore over her career and if you didn't know her story then it would not have been too clear.
I wasn't keen on the comments about her Father hitting her and some of the chat with her and Vic Billings was unfounded I would think.
the chats with Pat were good.
I also didn't like V.W. and her comments to Dusty that Norma was no good for her, after they had split up.
I think they got the message across quite well that she battled with the Mary versus Dusty persona.
all in all I suppose it was as good as it could be within the time constraints of the show.
the best part of it all was that they used Dusty's voice for all the song clips. it was lovely to hear that on big speakers.
also very poignant at the close of the show to play " someone to watch over me"
as a small production it was well performed and I am glad I saw it. [:)]

Re: Dusty Show ..Call Me Dusty

Postby Rob » Sat Oct 19, 2013 4:36 pm

I really enjoyed the show and it was great to see Liz there too, and as she has said, she's glad she went. I did wonder if i would get there on time. I left work earlier than usual but my bus was 35 minutes late and then the traffic was terrible. In the end i got there with just under 15 minutes to spare.

The show was obviously not a high cost production but the limited sets and props were used with great imagination. I know tyhe character was playing Dusty but all along i approached it as though it was a
Dusty character telling Dusty's story. It was good that the show used the original recordings. The time meant that whole significant episodes in her life such as the Fox theatre days had to be covered in just minutes but Dusty's life journey was told in a way that drew you in. I don't know how accurate it was but a lot of it most definitely was. The script was very accurate when dealing with the South Africa trip and the Dusty in Memphis album because it used words that i've heard spoken directly by Dusty and Jerry Wexler. Apart forn the Dusty character there who two other (one male and one female) who played a variety of roles. All in all, a very enjoyable evening. [:)] [8D] [^] [:)]

Really enjoyed reading these mini reviews earlier. It sounds like it was a nice show done in good taste. [:)]

ImageThis almost flew completely under the radar but Call Me Dusty has been revived for a November 10 to 18 run at the Hall Green Little Theatre in Birmingham: the original 2013 production was according to our dear departed friend Rob "obviously not a high cost production" and as the HGLT troupe is an amateur company the same observation will almost certainly apply. And for myself if I see an actress playing Dusty - at least in a live production - I'd prefer to hear her sing Dusty's songs herself however imperfectly rather than mime to Dusty's records which reportedly was done in 2013 and presumably is being done now at Hall Green. But I don't mean to criticize a show I haven't seen - hey I'd love to see one of these Dusty stage musicals: none has come closer to me than 270 miles away! If anyone's interested I'll post the link to the HGLT site: perhaps any one who can't catch the current tour of the Son of a Preacher Man musical should check for a HGLT revival of that in a few years! http://www.hglt.co.uk/dusty.htm
