Dusty behind the scenes

Postby Corinna » Tue May 02, 2017 12:03 pm

I’ve recently seen this letter where Dusty describes her day performing ‘I’ll try anything’ on TOTP on February 24, 1967, the show being broadcast the following day. (Paul Howes mentions the airing date for this particular show as February 23, but I guess we’ll have to take Dusty’s word for it.) As you will realise, it’s a lot of work for a two-and-a-half minute song! As Dusty herself sums it up, “That’s show business? OY!”

I’ve tried to retrieve a video clip or sound recording of this particular performance (even involving Carole G. in the search - thanks, Carole!), but to no avail. I’ve found the relevant TOTP episode on Daily Motion - but, annoyingly enough, Dusty’s contribution is missing, and, instead, her performance on her own BBC show is inserted. Confusing! So what I’m posting below is the performance from the DUSTY BBC 1 series, which was recorded a few months later.

Here’s a transcription of the bits and pieces for ease of reading.

MANCHESTER
EVENING FRIDAY 24th

I’m sitting here in the
dressing room.

I
got up at 6.30 to be here, missed the
plane, got one to Liverpool, tore here in
a hired car an hour and a half late
only to discover that they hadn't
even arrived at my little piece at all.
That's show business? Oy.

10 pm
I’ve just come off after croaking
my way through 2½ minutes
of horror. I wasn’t very good
at all - I moved like a very
prim British lady trying to do
the Boo-ga-loo - oh what
the hell the exposure is good,
I’ll be masochistic and watch it on
Saturday i.e. tomorrow.

11.20 PM
I’m now sitting in a railway
sleeper waiting to go to London. I’m pretty

sleepy so I expect I’ll drop off soon.
I quite like the motion of trains - it’s
lovely when it’s smooth but I don’t
like it when it takes about 5 minutes
to come to a halt - EEEEK - screech etc.

Fantastic indeed. What a find and thank you so much, Corinna, for sharing it and providing a transcription. The content is really interesting and it's so nice to see so much of Dusty's beautiful handwriting in one place too.

How exciting, it seems we have a mystery on our hands! Paul Howes just got in touch with me, saying that TOTP always was broadcast on a Thursday and probably recorded the day before. Which means the date he gives in the Bible is correct. [bow]

So what show recorded in Manchester and broadcast on Saturday could she have been referring to? :what?:

The letter I've seen doesn't actually indicate the show or the song, I extrapollated from the Bible, and the TOTP performance was the closest date.

The plot thickens! To be continued...

Firstly, thanks so much Cor for this insight, boo-ga-loo indeed [:D] As I already said to you, I'm sure her performance was way better than she imagined, I can't remember it but then that's not surprising for me! A day in the life.... The list below is actually who performed on Top of the Pops on the 23rd Feb 67, I wonder if Dusty got her days wrong? To my memory, it was always on on a Thursday night (in the NW TV region anyway), can anyone confirm that? I can't get the Daily Motion video to play properly on my computer for some reason but I'd say it's really just a compilation of acts that appeared in 1967 (clips from different places) and as far as I'm aware, there's only one surviving episode from that year.

Presenter: Simon Dee
Playlist: • The Beatles - Penny Lane [Promo Video] • Tom Jones - Detroit City [Repeat Performance] • The Troggs - Give It To Me [Repeat Performance] • Vince Hill - Edelweiss [Repeat Performance] • The Hollies - On A Carousel [Repeat Performance] • Jim Reeves - I Won't Come In While He's There [Disc] • Dusty Springfield - I'll Try Anything [Performance] • Herman's Hermits - There's A Kind Of Hush [Performance] • Petula Clark - This Is My Song [Repeat Performance
Repeat Performance (Vince Hill)

Ah, you (via Paul) have just answered my query about Thursday showings. Apart from coming up to Manchester to record a Scene at 6.30 Granada TV programme, I can't think of anything else. And anyway, she actually did appear on TotP's that week, which was recorded in Manchester.

Mystery solved! It's Doddy's Music Box! Anyone remember that show?

Paul Howes has found this piece of information. :bravo:

I'd want a peek into Paul's archives, wouldn't you? This performance will be included in the next edition of the Bible.

What a great bit of Dusty history!
Did she keep diaries ???

Doddys Music Box was 2 series (total 18 programmes) broadcast during 67/68. of Ken Dodd. It appears to be stand up comics and music. Could be Dusty appeared as guest artist. "Diddy David Hamilton" was also in the series not sure what his position was, possibly link man. It was shown on ITV so must have been a Granada production out of Manchester.

Not surprised the recording took soo long as Sir Ken, even now into his 80s ,will do a gig schedule for say an hour which will go on for 2-3 hours longer. So stamina is the thing and don't forget the sandwiches!

Did a little search and yes, she did appear on that show and it was broadcast on Saturday the 25th. I'd forgotten that Top of the Pops had moved to London by 1967 after it's initial few years in Manchester, so she appeared live on that on the Thursday and then "tore" up to Manchester for the Doddy show. It was all go [:)]
