A Little Piece of My Heart: The Essential Dusty Springfield

The above-titled 3-CD boxed set is being released by Spectrum on 23 September. It has appeared on Amazon UK with a pre-order price of £7.99. Amazon has no details yet of artwork or track listing. I have tried various Universal sites, but can find no further information.

Still no track listing on Amazon or other major sites. However, a seller on ebay has shown a track listing.

Give Me Time and The Look of Love are not included. I would have thought that TLOL was pretty 'essential'. Similarly, I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten and its B-side are omitted. Also, why eight tracks from From Dusty...With Love?

thanks for the tracklist Jim, strange amazon still don't have it only 2 days before release.

Yes a couple of strange omissions but good to see a few less usual tracks included.
Dusty's post 1970 catalog still seems to be out of bounds though.

I will get this set as it is such a reasonable price.

My copy arrived from Amazon this morning.
I've only played CD1 and 2 as yet.

On CD1 2 tracks are from BBC La Bamba complete with Brian Matthew intro.
and
I Just Don't Know What do with my self

A strange mix of A and B Sides and album tracks

but still worth £7.99 of anyone's money.

When are they going to rerelease the United Artist tracks, White Heat and may I dare say Affection.

Please excuse typing fingers wont do what brain says !!!

Take care

I am only now getting round to listening to the discs in this set.

One thing I did notice is that a stereo version of Losing You is included. This track was mixed to stereo in the 1990s when Universal in the States were preparing for the CD release of Dusty's US albums of the 1960s, It duly appeared in stereo on the 1999 CD release of Oooooweeee! in the States.

However, Universal in the UK continued to use the mono mix for UK releases. The stereo mix has a more extended fade than the mono version and shows Dusty to be pretty hoarse by the end. There was a suggestion in DSB that there had been sort of agreement between those representing Dusty or her estate and Universal UK that the stereo mix would not be issued in the UK. However, time passes and people move on.

So, unless I am mistaken, this is the first UK release of Losing You in stereo. Even the 2011 boxed set had to make do with the mono mix.

Thanks for that info.................definately getting hoarse at the end and the beautiful brass section opening is slightly muted.
Listened to it today in the car................still find You dont own me vocals one of her best and Anyone who had a heart sounded great.

I got this yesterday for a real bargain price of £5.99. As has been mentioned, packaging is minimal but the sound seems good throughout and it is nice to have Losing You in Stereo. Now I just need to order a CD copy of Where Am I Going and I think I have all the 60s studio recordings that have been officially released. Next goal is to try and find some mint minus copies of original mono albums.

I've just picked this up in HMV and noticed when I loaded it onto iTunes that many of the tracks are specified as being 'mono version'. I wondered if, in general, stereo versions have appeared on most previous collections rendering at least some of these versions, in effect, rare (in terms of CD releases at any rate). Does anyone one know if some of these mono mixes are unique to this collection ?

In the main, the tracks you mention were originally issued as mono singles in the 60s. In later years these tracks have appeared in stereo mixes on LPs and/or CDs. In some cases the stereo mixes sounded quite different from the original mono mixes. The most obvious are In The Middle of Nowhere and Little By Little. This compilation has the original mono mix of Little By Little, although it is not described as such. The stereo mix omitted some of the backing vocals that had appeared in mono.

Once Upon A Time is in the original mono mix, as the stereo mix had an additional vocal over the intro. I'll Love You For A While is in mono with backing vocals, as the stereo mix omitted these.

My Colouring Book is in mono as there is no stereo master tape for this track. The same applies to Anyone Who Had A Heart and You Don't Own Me. although, in the cases of these two tracks, there are stereo master tapes, but they have alternative vocals, which first appeared on the 1997 re-issue of AGCD.

Most, if not all, of these mono mixes had made appearances on CD previously, either in the UK or US.

Many thanks for that - very interesting. I do remember how disappointed I was when I gave away my original AGCD CD when the reissue with the bonus tracks came out. I found out too late how different they were and now, even if you can find the first CD issue it's really pricey. I guess many of the Greatest Hits packages over the years will have used stereo/album mixes so, even if most of the stuff on A Little Piece Of My Heart isn't new to CD I shall still treasure it a little more! With all the acticity in recent years (remastered AVFL and Reputation, the Real Gone releases, box sets etc) I think we need a third edition of Mr Howes' bible!
