Laura's great. But she doesn't quite 'do' it for me, not like Dusty... sorry, Laura.

To be quite honest Corinna -neither!....actually Dusty's IS the better version - but the song just doesn't do it for me.

Not a song I care much for but I'd have to pick Helen's.

Don't much like any version of 'I Am Woman' ..

Stevie has the edge on Uptight.

Always liked The Drifters version of 'Up On The Roof'

Heres one we don't hear too much:

Jerry Butler : Mr. Dream Merchant.

So who 's d'ya prefer Jerrys or Dustys...?.. [}:)]

Jerry's or Dusty's, Jerry's or Dusty's, Jerry's or Dusty's - DUSTY'S [:D] Jerry's is nice too.

And so is Mads, she really should have been a HUGE star with a wonderful voice like hers.

Yes, I agree, a wonderful voice which has stood the test of time.
Your comment John, bodes the question:
Is it better to have a long and respected career than to achieve huge shooting star status, which fades quite quickly?...(maybe I'll start a thread!).. [:I] [;)]

As a pure bit of singing, I prefer Dusty's "I Am Woman," but while the coda works as a bit of stagecraft (so does playing a guitar solo with her teeth and then lighting it on fire, which would have made a much better ending to the song) and it could be taken as the kind of joke Yoko Ono was doing around that time-talking about men in a demeaning, sexist way as a parody of male attitudes toward woman-I can imagine Helen Reddy listening to it and thinking "She really screwed up my song." There's also some irony in singing this song while wearing a low-cut gown. Offhand, I can't think of another clip where Dusty shows cleavage.

Agree about the conflicting messages, Tommy. I wonder if Dusty thought (to quote Emma Goldmann) "If I can't dance to it, it's not my revolution". [8D]

Dusty's - without a doubt.
Blossom Dearie is certainly an 'aquired taste' isn't she?.
Although we all love her 'Dusty Springfield' - she's not really a great singer.

Blossom Dearie's version is a nice jazz version, Dusty does it as a torch song with an orchestra, so she doesn't play with the rhythm the way Blossom does, but she doesn't have room to do that in either. One's a jazz singer, the other a pop singer covering jazz-influenced material. A better comparison would be to Linda Ronstadt's standards records, and Dusty definitely comes out ahead there.
