Cor, do you mean that you've never heard of Melanie before? She had 2 huge UK hits with 'Ruby Tuesday' and 'A Brand New Key'. The latter got to #1 in the US where she also had a #6 hit with 'Lay Down (Candles In The Rain).

:rose:  :rose: Melanie, a Canadiene artist, and original song writer. She had a unique tone or quality to her voice. What could you call it? :note: :rose: :note:

Read your post and you said you hadn't heard of her before, but this one is still played a lot.

Here's the original of "Spooky." Not the best sound quality, but from the comments on some other videos, it looks like this is something that disappears quickly, so I'll take what I can get.

And for anyone else who's nostalgic for 70s New York punk rock/no wave and the like. This was actually the second version that I heard, after Classics IV, and it was a bit of a broadening experience to hear someone I had previously associated with harsh noise and anger do a relatively straightfoward version of the song. (which I always loved. My worlds were colliding.)

Love Lydia Lunch's 'Spooky', in fact I love Lydia [:)] Of course Classic IV's version is always a fav too but this is yet another song that Dusty made her own.

Here is another that I haven't associated with Dusty until recent years...I absolutely love Dusty's version of "This Girls In Love". too bad no video for her. I think I like Dusty's the best..I like her timing, her sexiness and the Dustyisms that she adds to make it oh so much better than the others. It was quite the popular song as you can see
paula x

here is another version I have never heard.. from the oh so smooth, Miss Ella Fitzgerald..of course a little jazzier

a soulful version from Aretha F.

another from Petula Clark

and of course tif its a Bachrach song ..it was covered by Dionne Warwick

in the states, it was Herb Alpert's version that was played constantly over the airwaves at the time
I like this version...I think Dusty sings it more like Herb than the others. not bad for a trumpet player...taken from a guest spot on 'the Carpenters Variety Show'

Carole King – Up on the roof (1971)

A ‘couple years’ later…

The Drifters - Up On The Roof

and…. Dusty on Rolf Harris 1971 (in colour)

And a slightly slower version (b/w) (probably on Andy Williams Show 1971)

First version of Dust's for me , [ not biased am I ] [^] Carole's version ok but piano drowned it out a bit .The Drifters version , have always liked this as it was totally different ,more up beat.

Biased, Karen? Never! [;)] I also prefer Dusty's slightly faster version. Would have loved to hear her have another go at it 20 years later or so, like CK...
