Mockingbird - Dusty & Jimi Hendrix

Here's another pearl from Dusty's live performances -- Mockingbird, a duet with Jimi Hendrix.

On YouTube, there's Jimi's complete performance -- Stone Free, Mockingbird (w/Dusty), and Voodoo Child. Audio only.

The bit of film clip that exists is thrilling.

And the question must be asked: who had the bigger hair?

:star: Jimi was fanatical about his hair.
It was real, not a wig, and so he was very defensive for his 'fro.
At a record show I attended one guy had a boot-leg DVD of Hendrix performances. It included Dusty, and Jimi.
With no way to preview the goods I passed it up. I couldn't believe an American in Cleveland could have the actual footage. :star:
Can you imagine being there for the live show ?

What a thrilling collaborative effort between two music legends, and how incredible that audio exists in such surprisingly good quality considering the video archive was (unfathomably) wiped by the TV network. Further proof (as if we needed it) that Dusty was supremely versatile as a vocalist!

Thanks for posting! This is the most complete clip I've seen. The video appears to contain bits of both "Mockingbird" and the JHE solo performances. I wonder if the audio was sourced from an audio-only fan recording and played over the mixed video footage?

That video seems to have been taken down. I'm not sure if it's the same quality, but this appears to be a re-upload. It sounds much better than the short video clip of Dusty and Jimi. From the research that I've been doing, apparently there's a soundboard recording of this lasting about 13 minutes long. Can anyone confirm or deny? Or is it just misinformation? I'm going to keep digging to see if I can find it.

Thanks for posting the re-posting here!

YouTube audio files are compressed when converted into video format and so there is some degradation in audio quality compared the source file. It would be amazing to obtain the original separate audio-only file. Oh where would one begin to search for such a rarity?

I've found evidence of it's existence on several Jimi Hendrix bootlegs... But whether there's a soundboard recording (as is indicated) or if there are only recordings from the broadcast is the question. Either way, you're right. Youtube compresses everything. Ideally, there'd be a soundboard to FLAC file (lossless, unlike mp3) out there. I just double checked my collection, I don't have it. But if I can find a trading circle that has it, I have enough trade bait that I should be able to get it in trade. *crosses fingers*

Funny you should mention this. I was working on trying to improve the audio quality of this yesterday afternoon. As you'll hear on this one which appears to have been recorded through a mic pointing at a TV set it's very bass.

Got as far as improving the sound both of Jimi's strings and Dusty's vocals, but unfortunately the more I tried to fiddle with it the more the imperfections in the original audio become magnified and so does the 'tape hiss'. Still, it's an improvement on what I started with. Now, if I can just figure out how to rip off the only known existing film images ........

Yeah, that's the only known existing film, however .................

"In the making of this Lucky Motions Production our primary motive was to create a visual presentation from the only known existing film of the broadcast performance that compliments the complete audio soundtrack we were fortunate enough to obtain from a member of the Lets Talk Dusty, Dusty Springfield fan Forums.

Presently the only known film footage, which is badly damaged and sadly incomplete, originates from a home movie. The original recording of this home movie was made by actually pointing the camera at the television screen and recording the live broadcast.

Though much painstaking work has been done on this film close examination would appear to indicate that this is not the restoration of one complete performance, but the compilation of the rescued film of the three songs performed by Jimi Hendrix on the Dusty show, which included Jimi's duet with Dusty Springfield.

With the aim of producing a visual presentation which would accompany the audio recording of the duet, 'Mockingbird', the existing compiled film has been edited and reconstructed to mimic the original duet sequence more in felt keeping with the audio recording rather than the present reconstructed and rescued film clip does at present.

Therefore the shots of the band on set without Dusty being in them, the shots of Mitch Mitchell hammering the hell of his drums, the shots of Noel Redding playing bass, and the shots of Jimi playing guitar with his teeth and some of the solos more in keeping with a performance of 'Voodoo Childe' which did not fit in with the tempo or feel of this audio recording have been edited out of this reconstruction.

That however left very little actual footage from which to work from. Never the less, with some creative innovation a reconstructed sequence reflective of the feeling of the audio track was constructed. We hope you feel, as we do, that the film is more in keeping with the tempo and mood of the audio recording than the existing reconstruction of original surviving film.

Though we have already stated how the audio recording from Show Six on the 13th June 1968 in what is known in Dusty circles as the 'ATV Recordings' was acquired, it should be noted that this recording would appear to have been made on a reel to reel tape recorder by placing a microphone next to a television set. As such the original audio recording was of exceedingly good quality although in mono and with the voices of those in the room able to be discerned excitedly exclaiming as Dusty announces which song she and Jimi are about to perform. This original audio recording has been worked on and enhanced during the production of this film. To date it is the only known complete audio recording of this unique performance.

Though ViperTheUndead and Lucky Motions have had the audio recording since 2012 we did not have any of the existing known 8mm film, or access to it, although a copy of it was published on YouTube on 13/9/2012. That left us with the problem of obtaining it for the purpose of this reconstruction. Rather than 'ripping' it via methods which might not be entirely legal we decided to embrace the spirit of those who made the original audio and film recordings. Simply put, we aimed our camera at the computer screen and filmed the film in exactly the same manner the original film was recorded. It is from this film of the film, recorded by Lucky Motions, that the reconstructed footage has been constructed from at The Lair.

This film and enhanced soundtrack were produced first and foremost for all the members of the Lets Talk Dusty forums, and is dedicated to all of them. We hope the wider viewing public enjoy this film just as much."

Enjoy.

Hi, for you interest....
Just to let you know it was me that shot the original silent footage on my 14" TV in 1968.
The footage on this site is just a slowed down version, but original is a comp of 3 songs on the show.
Shame on ATV for wiping.
For my full story please pick up a copy or Jim Press (Hendrix UK Mag) when out in March ish

John E Moon:

Many thanks for capturing what remains the only surviving footage of this legendary performance.

Do you still have your domestic recording, or are the YouTube videos the only surviving footage of your footage?

It is a shame that no surviving masters or transmission copies have surfaced from either the 1968 ATV series It Must Be Dusty or the 1969 BBC series Decidedly Dusty. As they say, maybe someday.

Sorry to revive an old thread but has anyone else seen this new Youtube uploaded a month ago? It's got the full Jimi Hendrix Experience set as an audio, some photographs from the recording and the quality of Mockingbird seems (to my ears at least) to be better than the other uploads so far.
