YOUR DUSTY SONG OF THE MOMENT

Postby Chris66 » Wed Aug 18, 2010 8:50 am

Is there a particular Dusty song that you are listening to at the moment. I listen to songs again and often find something new ( maybe a drum roll ) now that I have many Dusty songs on my MP3 player even more so.

This week's most listened to for me is JUST ONE SMILE

I loved Gene Pitney's original but Dusty's version is superb

Cheers

Strangely enough it's 'In the winter' for me right now. Strange timing, I know. I'm fascinated how she expresses feelings of profound loneliness and despair with very little means, it's all held in check and only just ripples the very composed surface.

In a way, this is the "dark sibling" of Look of Love, which Burt Bacharach has described as "held in check, but underneath it's smouldering".

Hi Corinna,
I never thought of those two songs in that way. I do like IN THE WINTER but I have never had the feelings about the song that you and other forum members have expressed. I will listen to it again !

Now GOIN BACK has always filled me with so many feelings from the moment I first heard heard it.

Oh yes, Goin' back.... <3 When I heard it the very first time, I couldn't believe Dusty was only 26 or 27 at the time she recorded it. So much wisdom and also a little resignation expressed in this song like it was sung by someone with much more life experience. And of course, knowing that it was played at her funeral adds a more sombre note to it too.

Love "Goin Back " obviously some sadness attached to it now. At the moment my overplayed song is" I Just Fall In Love Again " [:)] , don't ask me why.

It seems like I copy what other people have written(Cor) but I have also been listening to "In The Winter" very much recently! This song is almost new to me [:I] and I really like it  so sad, and it expresses loneliness so good I think :pensive:
Another - totally different - song I'm listening to now is "Don't Call It Love". I think Dusty sounds so cool [8D] here and I like the arrangement of the song :note:

right now the Dusty song I keep listening to is "Reputation".
really...who cares what they're whispering!!!!

@Helen- I recently got "Sometimes Like Butterflies". I love the song, and despite the vocal problems near the end, I think we can get past all the Hippodrome/Stringfellow bad memories and allow Dusty's passionate performance to take it's rightful place along the rest of her work. Listen to her wail when she comes off the break, near the end of the song (before her voice starts giving way...)

Lately I've been fond of I FOUND LOVE WITH YOU (is that the right name?) Also a very underrated song IMHO.

At the moment for me, it's two.

"I Only Wanna Be With You" (the stereo version)
Such an extremely exuberant song and always makes me smile

And "Can I Get a Witness?" Where she does the song better than Marvin Gaye, IMO. Such passion!!

Bosseh- I told my friend Vince in California you posted this, and he laughed. But even he had to admit, it's a fun song. Dusty is really reaching for some notes at certain points. [;)]

I'm amazed she sang this live- according to Paul Howes, she sang it on Dinah!

now that i think about it, this song was the only one on the It Begins Againpoll to get zero votes. Or at least it was- let me doublecheck... :?

:rose: [8D] :rose:
Actually I think mine is a CD of the moment. I keep the Rhino compilation Love Songs in my car, and play it on the commute to and from work. Several songs grab me. Richest Girl Alive is like a jingle. Can't explain why I like it, but I do. Then she hypnotizes me with The Colour of Your Eyes it has a joyous meloncholy to it. I love Dusty's timing when she's doing jazz, and Meditation really does it for me.
Where will I find this song In the Winter? I'm sure I don't have it anywhere, nor have I heard it.
Could someone give us a link ? :note: [ear] :note:

Thanks for the leads to In The Winter Karen and Liz. I'm just going to have to find Simply Dusty, and buy it . I know there are other songs in that box set which I must have. [:p]

there's several Dusty songs I still don't have- "But it's a Nice Dream", "I Wish That Love Would Last", "I Wanna Control You", etc. some of which are on Simply Dusty.

I'm gonna buy the Heart & Soul CD (which has some of those songs) soon, but big purchases are on hold, as I've got bigger fish to fry... [:D]

you dont have to use paypal Rob will take cheques for the stuff. the DSB sells stuff too but you have to go through the old bulletins to see what is left that you would like and then contact Paul Howes and if he has any left now he will sell them to you. again a cheque is ok.

Hi Helen, there are many interpretions of Meditation or Meditação. It's an Brazilian song, If my memory is o.k.! and there are many interpretions of this song.

I know the tune from

Frank Sinatra:

and Astrud Gilberto
.

I assume our Brazilian song expert on LTD SweMaria knows a bunch more interpretations! [:D]

no really I am because I am looking for "what did she know about railways" on my ipod all the time and really enjoying it. I also find I am playing her debut medley,"I love a piano " from Simply Dusty box set. they are so sweet and quirky and sum her personality up better than any words we can put together.

Dusty's version of the song IS very special. I haven't heard a swing version of it before and I LOVE the way she's singing it :dig: BUT the song is a slow and very rhythmic Bossa nova from the beginning and I love that too :note: :dig:
Astrud Gilberto was/is a famous interpreter of bossa nova music in Europe, USA and other western countries(maby it's beacause she's singing in English) but I've heard from Brazilian friends that she's not that popular in Brazil...
My favourite bossa version of the song on Youtube is with Joao Gilberto(married to Astrud G. during the sixties) and Caetano Veloso. Gilberto is credited with having created the bossa beat "The father of Bossa Nova".

During Neil and Jason's visit, we watched Dusty's BBC DVD. This song brought my Curt to tears, and I've been playing it constantly since. It's such a heartbreaking vocal, and a very sweet reminder of a wonderful weekend...

 I love everything about that clip. The wig, the dress, the satin shoes, and when she starts diddy-boppin' around like that I just can't help but smile. [:D]
Something about that tune always reminds me of Petula Clark's "Downtown". The beat, the horns, the high echo, I don't know. Something in the arraingements.

I have two! Midnight Sounds which I finally got to hear this week! Thank you so much Taylor. The other track is Corner of the sky which I found on a cd I bought yesterday, Now and then by Petula Clark. I'm not sure how much of the orignal was recorded so turning it into a duet was possibly the only solution. I'd have loved a completely Dusty version, but I do like this duet. Rich.x

i've never heard Dusty's vocal alone, but according to Paul Howes, she never actually sang through a complete verse (thus making it impossible for them to include a patchwork version on the Beautiful Soul compilation). I'm glad Pet chose to complete the song. It's actually one of my favorite 70's showtunes (although, to be honest, there aren't many from this period that I actually care for...), with those lyrics.

"Rivers belong where they can ramble, eagles belong where they can fly. I've got to be where my spirit can run free...gotta find my corner of the sky..."

 This is from a Johnny Cash show, and I had never seen this before.
Now I'm in love :pensive: all over again ! Watch her hands. Every motion is a cue. Like she's directing the song, the orchestra, and everything. Probably belongs in found on youtube, but it is my song of the moment.

Oh I love her Johnny Cash performances, too. Her hand movements are so amazing, aren't they. We had this clip discussed here a few months ago. I was of the opinion that she was reading the lyrics from her hands, if you look at 1:27 for instance. Otherwise you can't identify any lyrics on her hand, so I think it will remain a mystery.

I think she was trying to make her point don't put so much weight on the words.
They could be any words. She was so into the mood of the music, the arrangement,

I finally got the It Begins Again album. [:)] It was one of my last missing Dusty albums and it took me over one year to get it for an acceptable price. Of course it's no DIM, but I like the song collection. I generally have a soft spot for her work during the 70's. It's a pity that albums like Cameo or See All Her Faces didn't get the success they should have deserved. Back to It Begins Again.

I really love the Carole Bayer Sager & Peter Allen track I'd Rather Leave While I'm In Love :star:
