Flowers at Dusty's marker

Postby Rob » Mon Sep 20, 2010 7:20 pm

For almost the last two years, through the generosity of its members. LTD has paid a local Henley florist to put flowers at Dusty's marker twice monthly with special displays at Christmas and Birthday. This costs £580 per annum. However, members never get to see them and with thoughts of vases and even flowers being regularly removed concern has been expressed about the "value for money" and whether members can do better themsleves, taking flowers whenever they go to Henley and posting photographs fo fellow members to see.

The LTD team would be grateful for YOUR views, we're only paid up until end Septemeber. Is it time to stop our arrangement?

I'm happy to continue visiting the marker and placing flowers on - I do it twice a year, and occasionally three times, with the help of Cas and Jane, and I know others do as well ie Trek, Carole, Carole, Liz and Karen, and many others.

Perhaps we could get a pool of people willing to do this just once a year. Lots of people visit once a year anyway. If we could co-ordinate and be flexible. It's nice to see pictures of the flowers that go on.

I would be in favor of exploring the option of some permanent plantings by the marker, as well. I know one of our members got permission from the vicar before to plant roses. Unfortunately they did not survive, but perhaps with some research and professional plantings, we might have better luck.

We spoke to Rob at length re this and didn't really find the answer as we always came up against some stumbling block or other. Something permanent would be nice if we could get permission, and I like the idea of a Dusty Rose Bush, this as Jeffery points out would need a bit of attention, but maybe only about twice a year. also like the idea of members placing flowers on in LTDs name, its just a matter of how many would be willing to do this of course.

this query is getting lost as we seem to be talking about it on the Sept meet up on "lets get together". just to say we talked to Rob when we met and he asked us for our thoughts on how the ltd site organises this.
we said what we had thought about, and there were different options which have now been discussed on the other thread.
its such a difficult thing to sort out as everyone wants the marker to look nice and lovingly cared about all year round.
others, not on this site put flowers there too so perhaps it isnt often that its bare there [?]
It just seems a shame that on the birthday and Christmas days that there are lovely flowers there and we never see them. if only someone was near enough to just go and take pics of it there and have it posted on the site and then we would at least see them. it was really good when the man called Graham [?] did that utube film in the snow. :rose:

I've also caught up with the posts on t'other thread and there doesn't seem to be satisfactory solution.

I'd just like to confirm that LTDs current arrrangement with the florist in Henley ends this month

Just to confirm that the arrangement for twice monthly flowers has ended.

The only viable alternative would be to use a "planter" and hope it doesn't get taken.

The florist She could provide avery heavy container and plant it up with different flowering plants / evergreens four times per year depending on what was in seasons. The there would not lilkely be very many flowers in the winter months but plants themselves can be attractive. We discussed costs, initial purchase of container plus first palnting would be £100, with seasonal update £45-£50. She did say that she mayd be able to photograph and e-mail me if it was only 4 times per year. I think the choice is between this or nothing really. Members are clearly do not wish to continue with the flower arrangement and evrything else seems impractical. Of course, if someone takes the heavy container and / or plates away we won't have gained anything. We could try it and see what happens?

This totals out at £250 for the year compares to £560 per year we've paid for the last year and three quarters, so it's quite a lot less. We'd probably only have to worry about watering for the Summer months, there's likely to be enough rain the rest of the year. I guess we should hope it will not be easiy damaged by frost too.

I'd be grateful for your views

Its very difficult to know what to do Rob isn't it, but I feel the planter could be a good choice. Do the church allow this kind of thing?
Its nice that the lady can maybe provide a photo every so often too.

It sounds like a good option, well worth a try. And hopefully, it will make Dusty's marker look good for a longer time than is possible with bouquets.

And there will be floral tributes for special occasions, won't there, Rob?

Thanks, Rob, for your efforts. Much appreciated! :star:

I think its worth a try Rob and in line with some of our discussions and suggestions too.
at least the important times like her Birthday, her anniversary and Christmas would look nice and perhaps we would actually get to see the pics too. as we said many other times of the year fans go there and take flowers . :rose:

I think it is absolutely well worth a try, and a viable option. Thanks Rob for your hard work.

I wouldn't be too worried about it being stolen, more concerned about the little old lady removing it and throwing it in the bin.

I too think the planter is a smart idea...and we can only hope that nobody chucks it away though it is hard to control anything that happens in an enviroment like this.

After the much appreciated feedback frfom LTDers and discussion amongst the admin team this is what we are going to do.

There will be floral tributes ( as before) at Christmas, March 2nd and April 16th (these are at £40 each)

Instead of twice monthly flowers the florist will provide a haevy planter and fill with seasonal plants (both flowering and evergreen depending on season) on a quarterly bases. The florist will e-mail a photograph to me for posting on the board, though it will be great to see members photographs too

This arrangement will begin on 1st December. The initial cost will be £100 to cover the cost of the planter and first set of plants with quarterly replantings costing £50 each.

I hope this meets with members approval and that the planter will not be taken or stolen. If it is we'll just have to abandon the idea. Everyone cross their fingers!

...and here we are, looking good with the first plantings and a message from Nicki the florist

The urn is at the bottom of the stone at the moment because the day I went down it was zero temperatures and the other pieces were stuck in ice so I couldn’t move them out of the way! I will pop down and check it over the weekend to see if things have thawed out a bit and will re-arrange them.

Nicki has just sent me this photo of the wreath she's put for us at Dusty's marker for Christmas, apologising that it is a little blurry. It may be a bit blurry but it looks very colourful and Chrstmassy with a lot of different things in it.

As you can see, our planter is still there [^]

The flowers look beautiful and hopefully the snow wont treat them too harshly. I agree that the stone looks better for the words being highlighted by the snow, an unexpected touch.

just to say that my niece lives in Amersham, half an hour away from Henley and they went there today for an afternoon out, wandering generally. they then realised that they could go to the marker and see it for themselves ( I have talked about it and Dusty quite a bit  ) anyway they went and it has lots of flowers, including ours and some lovely tulips ,there were a few little cat ornaments and a card from someone from overseas. she said it all looked lovely there so I thought you would all like to know. they also had a drink at the Angel on the bridge, just wish I had been there too. I'm very pleased to say that i am able to upload photos that were taken earlier today and e-mailed to me by Nicki.

First one shows our special floral tribute with LTD card for 2nd march with our re-stocked urn behind it

Image

Next is a closer shot of the urn. As Nicki said to me in her e-mail "The planted urn looks very green at the moment but it is actually packedwith Muscari, the baby grape Hyacinths which when open will be a mass ofsoft blue. Soft blue....sounds good!

Image

Lastly, a close up of of the urn
