Your Favorite Tracks from LONGING

Postby mnmcv1 » Fri Jul 30, 2010 10:29 pm

Choose THREE. [:)]

**the version of this song to be considered is from the 1974 Brooks Arthur sessions, not the later remake.

***As "Corner of the Sky" was eventually released as a duet between Dusty and Petula Clark, you may base your vote on this version.

Overall, to me, this is one of Dusty's weaker albums. But as usual, there are some pearls. :rose:

I love these songs and found it really difficult to choose apart from In the Winter of course which to me is one of her very best songs ever. :dig:

You NEED it! [:D] The CD's called 'Beautiful Soul' and it has cameo and then the longing tracks. It's worth it for those even if you already have Cameo. Maybe some of the songs might be on Youtube?

Yeah, unless you're loaded! Maybe ebay has it for less, I can't remember where I got mine from now but it probably was Amazon, or possibly HMV.
I'd pay £26, if it's like new and if I couldn't find it anywhere else. Didn't realise it was that rare.

Helen, there's a used copy on amazon.com (US) for $23.99, with the exchange rate it would be a little bit over £15. Not cheap, but not exactly a fortune, considering you're technically getting 2 albums (well, one finished album and one almost finished album...lol)

it's also not bad considering the alternatives...

i gotta say, hearing Longing for the first time was a pretty emotional experience.
It's not perfect- hell, it's not even completed- but there are moments where Dusty's putting her heart on the line like she never did before (or would again). "In the Winter", "Home to Myself", "Exclusively For Me", "Beautiful Soul"...all have this tremendous intimacy to them.
I think i said it before, but my first time listening, I kinda felt like I was eavesdropping... [:I]

not to mention, I point to the Longing sessions as the last time we would hear the "classic" Dusty voice (notably in parts of "Make the Man Love Me"), as her vocals had undeniably evolved by the time she returned to recording 3 years later.

Aside from A Love Like Yours I haven't heard any of these. So sorry I can't vote.
Looks like I've got some catching up to do.
This CD Beautiful Soul is it a 2-CD set ? I know Cameo, but I'm not familiar with Longing thou it rings a bell. What is it's place in Dusty's history ?

@Jeffery-

the version of "A Love Like Yours" you've heard is probably the one from It Begins Again- this is actually a different version.

Longing (originally titled Elements) is the infamous album Dusty never finished.
It was to be her 2nd album for ABC/Dunhill Records (the followup to 1973's Cameo).
Dusty started recording it in the summer of 1974, in New York, with producer Brooks Arthur.
(if you've ever heard the story about Bruce Springsteen watching Dusty in the studio and musing, "she's so fine", this is the album she was recording).
Unfortunately, Dusty's personal life was spiralling out of control- without going into detail, she ended up in the hospital, and Longing- with the vocals not completed- was given the axe, although ads for it had already appeared in Billboard magazine.

aside from session work with Anne Murray and Elton John, Dusty didnt record again for 3 years. [V]

Dusty later recorded new versions of 3 songs-
"I Am Your Child" (same production w/ new vocal, the B side to 1977's "Let Me Love You Once Before You Go")
"Turn Me Around" (different production and vocal, on It Begins Again)
"A Love Like Yours" (different production and vocal, on It Begins Again)

some of the songs (most notably "A Love Like Yours", "Make the Man Love Me" and "Angels") only have a scratch vocal, but are still worth hearing.

As has been mentioned, some of the songs are on Simply Dusty and Classics and Collectibles.
However, 9 of the 10 tracks are included on Beautiful Soul: The ABC/Dunhill Collection, which is a single disc release (containing 20 tracks, ALL of Cameo and almost all of Longing).

The only song which was not included on that compilation was "Corner of the Sky", because Dusty never actually laid down a full verse. Petula Clark rescued the unfinished product a few years back, added her vocal with Dusty's and included it on her Duets album.
